Substitute Teachers

The CBE/ATA collective agreement provides for CBE substitute teachers to receive pay for attending one or both days of teachers’ convention. In order to be eligible, substitutes must meet two requirements:

1. the teacher must have worked at least 18 full days (or equivalent) between 2025 August and 2025 December 31, and
2. the teacher must be on the substitute roster during the days of convention. If you have fewer than 18 days of service during the aforementioned timeframe, you are not eligible for convention pay. There are no exceptions to this rule (job action has not resulted in any deviation from this minimum threshold).

If you believe you are eligible, and to declare that you will be attending Teachers’ Convention this year and receive pay, complete the following steps:

1. Register for Teachers’ Convention by visiting Home – Calgary City Teachers’ Convention Association (CCTCA) and signing up for sessions anytime after December 26 @ 11:59pm. Not all sessions require pre-registration – you can attend whichever convention sessions you wish (whether pre-registered or “rush” seating), provided that you are in session during the dates/times for which you are claiming convention pay as a substitute teacher.
2. Complete the Substitute Teacher Convention Attendance Declaration at https://survey.alchemer-ca.com/s3/50490922/2026-Substitute-Teacher-Convention-Declaration Fill in all fields of the form and indicate the date(s) you will be attending convention as a substitute teacher.
   • The form permits declaring attendance in half-day increments.
   • If you are a part-time teacher who usually works in the mornings on contract, you may be eligible to claim substitute pay for the afternoons at convention, for example.
   • If you only wish to attend convention in the mornings (for example), you may declare attendance during those times only.
3. Attend convention on the dates/times you have indicated.

Some important additional notes:

• The 2026 Calgary City Teachers’ Convention will be held in-person at the Telus Convention Centre and other facilities in Calgary, with no virtual components. In order to be eligible for substitute teacher pay for convention, you MUST be engaged in face-to-face convention activities during the dates/times for which you are claiming pay. It would be fraudulent to claim pay for convention and fail to participate in convention activities during the dates/times you have indicated.
• While Convention does include an exhibitor area, substitute teachers claiming pay for convention should be attending sessions during the dates/times for which they are claiming pay. Visiting exhibitor booths can occur before the start of sessions, after the completion of sessions, during breaks between sessions, or during the lunch break.
• If you have completed the form and later need to modify your declaration, click the “Edit” link that is sent to you in your confirmation email. (Confirmation emails are sent to your CBE email address – check your junk and/or spam folders if you do not receive it – confirmation emails are sent automatically after you submit your form and should arrive in your email inbox almost immediately.) You MUST edit your form submission if (for example) you are sick on the days of convention and subsequently do not attend, or if you are not attending for any other reason after declaring on the form that you would. The deadline to make changes to your declaration is 1700 hours on Tuesday, April 14, 2026. Failure to modify your declaration if you do not attend convention could result in employment consequences up to and including termination.

Please note that pay for convention will not be issued immediately. Pay will be processed on the typical CBE pay schedule, following the submission of the data file from Calgary Public Teachers (ATA Local 38) containing the pay declaration requests. This can often take several weeks AFTER CONVENTION to complete. Please allow for this processing time before contacting CBE or ATA to check the status of your convention pay declaration. THE FIRST BATCH OF PAYMENTS FOR ATTENDING CONVENTION WILL USUALLY ARRIVE IN LATE FEBRUARY. NO ONE WILL RECEIVE CONVENTION PAY PRIOR TO CONVENTION.

• Convention Pay does not appear as a separate/unique line item on your pay advice. It will be integrated with pay that has been provided for other “daily rate” jobs during that pay period. In other words, convention pay will appear on your pay advice like two additional “daily rate” jobs during the pay period in which it is issued.
